The game launches directly into a fight. Sonic is up against the True Guardian. You can choose whether you want to Attack, use Magic or Charge. If you select Magic, you'll have options for Thunder, Fire and Heal. Kicking off with Fire will knock nearly 150 Hp from the True Guardian.

A standard Attack leads to a little less than 100 Hp damage. While Charge doesn't do any damage directly to the True Guardian, it does give you the ability to benefit your own Attack, Defense or Magic.
